Overgrown Trees Interfering with Power Lines

Latest Updates

Trimming Schedule Confirmed for Phase 1

The Electricity Department has confirmed that Phase 1 trimming will commence within the next two weeks, focusing on the highest-risk zones identified during inspection.

Brooklyn will form part of the initial intervention cluster, with Hatfield scheduled immediately thereafter.

Residents may notice temporary lane closures during trimming operations. A detailed schedule will be shared once finalised.

We will continue monitoring implementation to ensure commitments are met.

Site Inspection Conducted with Municipal Officials

A joint site inspection was conducted this week with representatives from the Electricity and Parks Departments to assess high-risk trees identified by residents.

Several priority locations in Brooklyn and Hatfield were inspected. Officials have acknowledged that preventative trimming has fallen behind schedule due to capacity constraints.

A phased trimming plan has been requested, prioritising areas with repeated outages.

We are awaiting confirmation of timelines for the first intervention phase.

Issue Logged and Escalated to Electricity Department

Following multiple resident submissions, the backlog of trees interfering with overhead power lines in Brooklyn and Hatfield has formally been consolidated and escalated to the City of Tshwane Electricity Department.

We are looking to compile a list of over 500 reference numbers to be submitted for urgent review. The matter has been logged under the relevant regional maintenance cluster and classified as infrastructure risk.

We have requested a formal response outlining the planned intervention schedule and resource allocation for clearing the backlog.

Further updates will follow as feedback is received.

Trees causing issues in Hatfield

The Problem

Overgrown municipal trees in Ward 56 are interfering with overhead power lines in both Brooklyn and Hatfield. Residents have submitted more than 550 reference numbers relating to trees that pose a direct risk to electricity infrastructure.

In Brooklyn alone, over 400 logged cases remain unresolved. In Hatfield, more than 150 trees have been identified as high-risk. These interferences result in frequent power outages, damage to municipal infrastructure, and an average repair time of up to four days.

The current backlog reflects a failure of preventative maintenance, placing unnecessary strain on both residents and City resources.

Key Facts

Why This Matters

Frequent outages disrupt households, small businesses and essential services. In Hatfield, power instability directly impacts students and academic institutions. Repeated emergency repairs are more costly than scheduled preventative maintenance.

Residents deserve stable electricity infrastructure and proactive governance.
